It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Dick Olela, a comrade in the international peasant struggles for many years. It is definitely an irreplaceable loss for La Via Campesina and the Kenyan Peasant League. From the 182 organisations of La Via Campesina in 81 countries, we send a lot of strength to his family, friends and comrades to cope with his death.

KPL Mourns National Convener Cde Dick Olela
The Kenyan Peasants League (KPL) fraternity plunged into mourning after the demise of the KPL National Convener Comrade Dick Olela after a short illness that occurred yesternight at Christamarianne Mission Hospital in Kisii town in Kenya. Comrade Dick Olela was instrumental in the formation and development of KPL and was a key pillar and a militant who provided ideological directions of the KPL movement.
Kenyan High Court Extends GMO Ban
The High Court of Kenya has directed that the interim orders that stopped the importation, distribution and consumption of GMO crops shall remain in force up to 28 March 2023 when the matter shall be heard. This is after the Attorney General applied for the orders to be vacated.

KPL Tests Organic Pesticide
The Kenyan Peasants League (KPL) is currently testing the efficacy of two different organic pesticides in three clusters in Migori and Baringo County. The tests that are being supported by Evan Cornish Foundation and implemented in partnership with War on Want (WoW) is part of the “Transition to Agroecology for Food Sovereignty and Climate Justice project” that also has components of advocacy against importation of banned chemical pesticides from UK like paraquat occasioned by the recently signed UK-Kenya Free Trade Area agreement.
KPL and Allies to Mark International Day Against WTO
The Kenyan Peasants League (KPL) and partners under the banner of the Kenya Debt Abolition Network (KDAN) are set to hold an event in Kangemi Nairobi to mark the International Day of Action Against World Trade Organization (WTO) and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). Marked annually on 10 September, the day is set aside to by Social Movements to protest against the criminal trio of WTO, World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that are directly and indirectly promoting a host of multilateral and bilateral FTAs that have created a criminal level of inequality in this world. In 2018, it was estimated that 82% of the world’s wealth is now controlled by merely 1% of the people and this is attributed to the neoliberal policies of WTO, IMF and World Bank
KPL Condemns Ban of Sale and Roasting Green Maize
KPL condemns this move with strongest possible terms and is asking for the lifting of the ban as it goes contrary to the article 2(1) of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas (UNDROP) that obligates the Kenyan Government to respect, protect and fulfil the rights of peasants other people working in rural areas. The ban also goes against article 3 of the UNDROP stating that peasants have the right to full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms recognized in the Charter of the United Nations and that they have a right to determine and develop priorities and strategies to exercise their right to development and it obligates the Kenyan Government to take appropriate measures to eliminate conditions that cause or help to perpetuate discrimination. Furthermore, the notice is contrary to the article 27 of the Constitution of Kenya (CoK) stating that state every person has the right to full and equal enjoyment of all rights and fundamental freedoms including article 43(c) of the CoK stating that every Kenyan has a right to be free from hunger and to have adequate food of acceptable quality
KPL Youth Mark International Youth Day by Exchanging Seeds
The Kenyan Peasants League Youth Collective (KPL-YC), Mariwa Cluster today marked the International Youth Day (IYD) by exchanging indigenous seeds and establishing a Cluster Seed Bank. The event that was held at Mariwa village coincided with the International Youth Day that is marked annually on 12 August to bring youth issues to the attention of the international community and celebrate the potential of youth as partners in today’s global society and was also attended by members Mulo Cluster Youth Collective.
