The Kenyan Peasants League (KPL) fraternity plunged into mourning after the demise of the KPL National Convener Comrade Dick Olela after a short illness that occurred yesternight at Christamarianne Mission Hospital in Kisii town in Kenya. Comrade Dick Olela was instrumental in the formation and development of KPL and was a key pillar and a militant who provided ideological directions of the KPL movement.
The news of comrade Dick’s demise was broken by the KPL Secretary General Comrade Cidi Otieno who stated that “I am saddened to announce the demise of our National Convener Comrade Dick Olela a few minutes ago. May his soul Rest in Power”. All KPL members and allies were all united in shock on receiving the news. Comrade Rachael Mwikali, the Convener for the Coalition for Grassroots HRDs Kenya an ally of KPL described the late Comrade Dick as a fighter, a revolutionary and a strong supporter of grassroots movements and expressed her sincere condolences to KPL and the family of comrade Dick.
On his part, comrade Peter Owiti of Wote Youth CBO an ally of KPL stated that “I met him only once and was very impressed by the way he articulated issues and his humility. This world is not our home”. Comrade Susan Owiti described Comrade Dick as one of the men who supported the struggles of the KPL Women Collective while Comrade Gladys from Kabarnet Cluster described him as a fearless fighter, a brave soldier, a mentor and an academic reference to many in KPL movement adding that he fought for peasant farmers relentlessly.
Comrade Mateus of La Via Campesina (LVC) Africa described Comrade Dick as a fighter who will never be forgotten while Comrade Lina of the LVC Southern and Eastern Africa Secretariat described Dick as a militant who fought hard for the rights of peasants regionally. Comrade Chengeto of Zimbabwe Smallholder Organic Farmers Forum (ZIMSOFF) stated that the demise of Comrade Dick was a big loss to KPL and the LVC region as a whole. At the ongoing LVC African Continental Women Assembly in Mozambique, delegates paid tribute the the departed comrade.
Meanwhile the various KPL Clusters have expressed sympathy to the family with members of Rabolo Cluster paying a visit to the family at their home in Bar Village, Mulo in Migori County. KPL has also scheduled a zoom meeting later today to plan the way forward in consultation with the family.
