KPL to Host National Training on Agroecology & Climate Justice

The Kenyan Peasants League (KPL) Agroecology and Climate Justice (AE & CJ) Collective is set to hold a Four Days National Training on Agroecology and Climate Justice targeting members of KPL – AE & CJ Collective from 14 to 17 June 2021. The Four Days National Training shall take place in Kangemi and will be attended by representatives from KPL’s nine clusters namely Rabolo, Mariwa, Mulo and Kurutyange in Migori County; Apuoyo in Siaya County; Kamnarok in Baringo County; Kangemi in Nairobi County and Utawala and Mwende Munyanyau in Machakos County.

The first day of training shall focus on Climate Justice with a focus on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants (UNDROP), the Nyeleni Declaration and the Primer on Peasant Agroecology Achieves Climate Justice that was developed by La Via Campesina Southern and Eastern Africa Region (LVC SEAf) with support of Global Aktion, a Danish not for profit NGO. Thereafter the meeting will focus on the Kenya Climate Change Act, the Kenya Climate Change Action Plan and the Climate Change Policy where they shall be looked at from the perspective of UNDROP, Nyeleni Declaration and the Primer.

The second day of the training shall focus on the Peasants Seed Systems including Seed Selection, Seed banking and looking at the Kenyan Seeds and Plants Varieties Act with a view of highlighting sections that criminalize Peasants Seeds Systems. Another areas of focus on the second day shall be Soil and Water Conservation including Farming Systems, Managing Soil Erosion and Rain Water harvesting after which there shall be a visit to Kangemi Cluster land where there shall be a practical session on making Compost Manure. The third day will see all the participants make a field trip to Mwende Munyanyau Cluster in Machakos County where a Cluster Seeds Bank shall be established.

The Fourth Day shall focus on the role of Peasant Agroecology School in enhancing Climate Justice, Peasants Agroecology and Food Sovereignty and how KPL can use UNDROP, Primer and Nyeleni Declaration in advancing the struggle for Peasant Agroecology, Food Sovereignty and Climate Justice. The fourth day will also see participants making inputs on the draft Peasant Agroecology and Climate Justice curriculum, conducting home-based food test apart from developing a one year action plan for the KPL – AE and CJ Collective.

The National Training is犀利士 being enabled by funds coming under the “Path way to Climate justice” a regional project under LVC SEAf which is being 必利勁 hosted by Zimbabwe Smallholder Organic Farmers Forum (ZIMSOFF) a member of LVC SEAf region. KPL is also a member of LVC SEAf.
